The Student Learning Resources section of Govt. Dyal Singh Graduate College, Lahore has been developed to help students strengthen the academic, research, communication and digital skills required for success in contemporary higher education.

AI Literacy for Students

Artificial Intelligence has become an increasingly important part of education, research, communication and professional life. Consequently, AI literacy is now an essential digital and academic skill for university and college students.

AI literacy is broader than simply knowing how to use ChatGPT or write a good prompt. A genuinely AI-literate student should understand what AI can do, what it cannot reliably do, how its outputs should be evaluated, when its use is academically appropriate, and what ethical responsibilities remain with the human user.

Current AI systems can assist with tasks such as explaining concepts, brainstorming, language support, summarization, organization, coding and analysis. However, AI-generated information can also be incorrect, incomplete, biased, misleading or supported by fabricated references. AI should therefore support human learning and judgment rather than replace them.

What Should an AI-Literate Student Know?

1. Understanding Artificial Intelligence

Students should develop a basic understanding of:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Machine Learning
  • Generative AI
  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Training data
  • AI-generated text, images, audio and video
  • AI models and their limitations
  • AI assistants, workflows and AI agents

Students do not necessarily need to become programmers, but they should understand enough about these technologies to use them intelligently and critically.

2. Effective Prompting and Context

A good prompt clearly communicates the task, context, expected format and relevant constraints.

Students should learn how to:

  • state their objective clearly;
  • provide appropriate context;
  • specify the required audience and level;
  • request a particular format;
  • supply relevant source material when appropriate;
  • ask follow-up questions;
  • refine prompts iteratively; and
  • critically inspect the resulting answer.

Prompt engineering is an important AI skill, but it is only one component of AI literacy.

3. Verification and AI Hallucinations

Generative AI can produce confident answers that are factually incorrect.

Students should therefore never assume that an AI-generated answer is automatically reliable. Important claims should be checked against:

  • textbooks;
  • peer-reviewed research;
  • official publications;
  • reputable databases;
  • primary sources; and
  • authoritative institutional websites.

Particular care should be taken with dates, statistics, quotations, academic references, legal information, scientific claims and historical facts.

4. Academic Integrity and Responsible Use

Students should always follow the AI-use requirements established by their teacher, department, college, university or examination authority.

AI may be useful for learning where permitted, but students remain responsible for the work they submit.

Students should not use AI to:

  • present generated work dishonestly as entirely their own;
  • fabricate references, quotations or research findings;
  • generate or manipulate research data dishonestly;
  • bypass an assessment designed to measure their own knowledge or skills; or
  • conceal AI use where disclosure is required.

Where an instructor permits or requires disclosure of AI assistance, students should clearly state how the technology contributed to their work.

5. Human Authorship and Critical Thinking

AI should strengthen rather than weaken independent thinking.

Students should remain responsible for:

  • selecting ideas;
  • evaluating arguments;
  • interpreting evidence;
  • making academic judgments;
  • developing conclusions;
  • checking accuracy; and
  • producing the final work.

A useful principle is:

Use AI to support your thinking—not to surrender your thinking.

6. Privacy, Confidentiality and Data Protection

Students should think carefully before entering information into an AI system.

Do not upload confidential or sensitive material unless its use is authorized and appropriate. This may include:

  • personal identification information;
  • private student records;
  • unpublished research data;
  • examination material;
  • confidential institutional documents;
  • passwords or login credentials;
  • private correspondence; and
  • sensitive information belonging to another person.

Students should understand the privacy settings and policies of the AI service they are using.

7. Bias, Fairness and Representation

AI systems learn patterns from large collections of data. Their outputs may therefore reflect biases, omissions or stereotypes contained within those data or produced through model behaviour.

Students should critically examine whether an AI response:

  • unfairly represents a group;
  • excludes important perspectives;
  • treats assumptions as facts;
  • relies on cultural stereotypes; or
  • gives disproportionate weight to one viewpoint.

Critical evaluation is particularly important in subjects involving history, politics, religion, culture, gender, society, language and human behaviour.

8. Copyright, Attribution and Intellectual Property

AI literacy also involves understanding that the ability to generate material does not automatically determine whether that material may be used without restriction.

Students should consider:

  • copyright;
  • ownership;
  • attribution;
  • licensing;
  • plagiarism;
  • source acknowledgement; and
  • institutional requirements.

For academic work, original sources should be consulted and cited wherever possible rather than relying on an AI-generated description of those sources.

9. AI in Research

Artificial intelligence can support certain stages of research when its use is permitted and appropriately supervised.

Potential uses may include:

  • brainstorming research questions;
  • identifying search terms;
  • explaining difficult concepts;
  • organizing notes;
  • comparing possible research approaches;
  • language assistance;
  • assisting with coding;
  • examining patterns in appropriately prepared data; and
  • improving clarity during revision.

However, AI-generated references should always be verified, and researchers should never allow AI to fabricate evidence, participants, results, quotations or citations.

10. Multimodal AI and Synthetic Media

Modern AI is no longer limited to text. AI systems may work with images, audio, video, documents and other forms of media.

Students therefore need to develop the ability to question the authenticity of digital material.

Before accepting an image, recording, quotation, screenshot or video as evidence, consider:

  • Where did it originate?
  • Is the original source available?
  • Could it have been generated or manipulated?
  • Can the claim be independently verified?
  • Is important context missing?

This is increasingly important in an environment containing deepfakes, synthetic voices, AI-generated images and manipulated media.

11. AI Agents and Connected Tools

A recent development in AI is the emergence of systems that can perform multi-step workflows and interact with connected tools or information sources.

When using such systems, students should pay additional attention to:

  • what information the AI can access;
  • what permissions have been granted;
  • what actions it can perform;
  • whether an action can be reversed; and
  • whether human approval is required before something is submitted, shared, deleted or changed.

Automation does not remove human responsibility.

12. AI Skills for Future Careers

AI literacy is increasingly relevant beyond academic work.

Students should learn how to combine AI skills with distinctly human abilities such as:

  • subject knowledge;
  • critical thinking;
  • creativity;
  • communication;
  • collaboration;
  • ethical judgment;
  • adaptability;
  • empathy; and
  • problem solving.

The objective is not simply to learn how to operate an AI tool, but to develop the judgment necessary to decide when, why and how AI should be used.

A Simple Responsible-AI Checklist for Students

Before using AI for academic work, ask yourself:

  • Is AI permitted for this particular task?
  • Am I still doing the intellectual work required of me?
  • Have I checked important facts and references independently?
  • Have I protected private or confidential information?
  • Have I checked the answer for bias, errors and missing perspectives?
  • Have I cited the actual sources I used?
  • Do I need to disclose my use of AI?
  • Could I explain and defend the submitted work without AI assistance?

If the answer to the last question is no, additional learning is probably required before submission.

Thesaurus
