Govt. Dyal Singh Graduate College, Lahore, is a philanthropic gift from Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia (1849-1898), a Jatt of the Gill tribe. Born in Kashi and later moving to Majithia, India, he was educated at Mission Church School. A generous and liberal visionary, he regarded English as key to progress. With vast property in Lahore, Amritsar, and Majithia, he composed poetry, wrote articles, and supported literary and political figures. He also extended financial assistance to various social and educational institutions. Dyal Singh played a key role in establishing Punjab University and was a nominated member of its Senate. Recognizing the significance of education, he founded “The Union Academy” in Lahore in 1893. In 1910, Sir Louise Dane, then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, upgraded it to a college, naming it Dyal Singh College, Lahore. After independence, the college continued to offer its invaluable educational services. In the 1960s and 70s, it was recognized as one of Lahore’s leading institutions. A major revival began in 2021 when its name was changed to Govt. Dyal Singh Graduate College, Lahore. In 2022, the college introduced eleven new BS programs. The introduction of over twenty BS programs in such a short time is an extraordinary accomplishment. Today, Govt. Dyal Singh Graduate College is thriving once again, establishing itself as a prominent institution committed to meeting the academic needs of Lahore and Pakistan.
